Biltmore is as magnificent today as it was when it was built more than a century ago. George W. Vanderbilt created the estate in the 1890’s as a grand retreat in the North Carolina mountains. The estate officially opened to his friends and family on Christmas Eve 1895.

Those same jersey cows led to an overwhelmingly successful dairy operation that was an Asheville staple for decades in the early 1900’s.
It took six years to complete the 250-room residence, which had a floor area of some 4 acres (1.8 hectares). The mansion included 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, 34 bedrooms, and an indoor pool. In addition to a 10,000-volume library, the home also featured an extensive art and antiques collection. Intending the estate to be self-supporting, Vanderbilt set up scientific forestry programs, poultry farms, cattle farms, hog farms, and dairy. His wife, Edith, also enthusiastically supported agricultural reform and promoted the establishment of a state agricultural fair. He asked Richard Morris Hunt and Frederick Law Olmsted to design a village with architecturally compatible buildings and picturesque landscaping.
